Welcome to Trust: Estate Planning for New Families. I’m Tara, the owner of Trust, and I want to address something really important right now. People tend to think that estate planning is just for the really old or the really rich, and that if you’re neither of those, you don’t need an estate plan; that couldn’t be farther from the truth. There’s a lot of really important reasons why you need an estate plan, even if you don’t come to this process feeling like you have a hundred million dollars in the bank or that you are nearing the end of your life. First, an estate plan will determine a plan for your kids and for your property if something happens to you. As far as your kids go, you get to figure out who manages the property, how much they get and when they get it. Because let’s be honest, none of us want our 20 year olds to have $2 million to do whatever they want with. You should think of your estate plan as a gift for your family, a set of instructions for them to figure out what to do if you are not here to make those really important decisions. This is important whether you have ten thousand dollars in the bank or you have $10 million in the bank. Those are really important concerns that you should have a say in.
