Welcome to Trust Estate Planning for New Families. I’m Tara, the owner of Trust, and we are going to cover what are all the important estate planning documents to have in your estate plan. The first one is a will. The majority of my clients get on the phone with me and say, “I know I need a will.” What exactly is a will? Simply put, a will is a declaration of your wishes regarding the disposition of your property upon death. But more importantly, most of my clients come to me because they say, “I want to make sure my kids are taken care of.” And a will is a place where we make that happen. A will is the place where we name a guardian for your children. If something were to happen to you and your spouse and you’re unable to care for them. A will can also manage the disposition of your property. On its own, a will says, “I leave everything to my spouse. If my spouse isn’t living, to my kids.” We can also incorporate a trust into your estate plan where your will will leave everything to your trust. A will can also be amended and revoked throughout your life.
