Welcome to Trust: Estate Planning for New Families. I’m Tara, the owner of Trust. And now we’re going to address something that keeps every parent up at night. How do I protect my kids? What happens if something happens to me? That is usually the first thing out of my clients’ mouths when we sit down to talk about their estate plan is, “I want to make sure my kids are taken care of.” The biggest and most important thing you can do is put your estate plan together. This is how you determine who will take care of your kids and what will happen to them if something happens to you and your spouse. The second part of that is deciding what happens to them financially. And that is a more detailed part of your estate plan. But the most important thing you can do is think about who you want to be the guardian of your children. Who will take care of them? Who will tuck them in at night? Who will sign them up for school? Who will try to fill the role of mom and dad? That can be a really overwhelming thing to think about. And the biggest thing I always tell my clients about is that this is a second-best decision. Take some of the pressure off yourself. It’s really hard to make those decisions, because the ideal situation is having you take care of your kids. This is a second-best scenario. But nonetheless, an important thing for you to think about and for you to make the decision.
